Govt shuts schools due to heatwave alert.
The state government announced to keep anganwadis and schools up to Class X -both private and government - closed from Wednesday to Sunday in view of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a heatwave during that time,a government statement said.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik took the decision after conducting a review meeting,hours after he returned from his trip to Japan, with senior officers on the current heatwave situation in the state."The decision will be reviewed again on Sunday and the future course of action will depend on the changing weather conditions," s senior government officer said.

The IMD has predicted a heatwave in Mayurbhanj,Keonjhar, Balasore,Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh,Angul and Boudh from Thursday.Such a prediction,a first time during the season,came with the anticipation of the mercury level rising by three to four degree Celsius at many places in the state in the next four days.
On Tuesday, mercury level continued to witness a rising trend at several places across the state and touched 40 degree Celsius and above in nine cities.With a maximum temperature of 41.6 degree Celsius, Baripada town was hottest in the state for the day, followed by Jharsuguda at 41.2 degree Celsius.Bhubaneswar too sizzled at 40.7 degree Celsius while Cuttack recorded maximum 40 degree Celsius.Other places recording high temperature included Sambalpur (40.8 degree Celsius),Titlagarh and Boudh with 40.5 degree Celsius each.

H R Biswas,the regional head of IMD center in the city,said clear sky,westerly and North-westerly dry wind patterns and several other related factors will result in the temperature going up this week." This will also lead to heatwaves at isolated places,"he added.Biswas advised people to take precautionary measures and avoid exposure to the heat and dehydration.
The CM also directed the administration, particularly the panchayat raj and drinking water development, housing and urban development department and energy department to start preparing to meet emergencies that may arise out of the heatwave situation.
