Quotas for Dalit Muslims and Christians:SC
Brushing aside the Center's plea to wait for the report of Justice K G Balakrishnan Commission on the issue of bringing Dalit Christians and Dalit Muslims within the ambit of Scheduled Caste category to grant them reservation, the Supreme Court on Wednesday decided to adjudicate the issue saying it had been pending in the court of almost two decades.

The Centre appointed a new three-member Commission under former CJIKG Balakrishnan to examine whether SC status could be accorded to those who claim to have historically belonged to the SC community but converted to other religions, after rejecting the findings of the Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission which recommended their inclusion in the SC list.
As the government alleged that Justice Mishra Commission report was prepared without any field study and consultations,a bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul,Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Aravind Kumar said the report is not that "perfunctory" and said it would take a call on how much the court relied upon the findings or the empirical data of the report which has been rejected by the government. The bench said the government is making a very generalized statement and it should recheck the report.

The court said it would conclude the hearing in a time-bound manner and asked all the parties to file their brief written submission and make a common compilation for smooth hearing in the case in which both sides would get two days each to conclude the arguments.
Senior advocates Raju Ramachandran,C D Singh,Colin Gonsalves and Prashant Bhusan submitted that the issue could be adjudicated by the court as there is enough material which showed that Dalit Muslims and Dalit Christians are treated as 'untouchables.'
