Exclusion of tribals,who have converted to other religions.

    Thousands of protesters from a tribal outfit marched across the city demanding exclusion of tribals, who have converted to other religions,from the Scheduled Tribe(ST) category.

    Tribal leaders from janajati Surakshya Manch said they should not be given facilities meant for STs.

    Men and women in colorful attire from different parts of the state began their March from three different places —-- Ram Mandir,Saheed Nagar and Nayapalli—-- and gathered at Janata Maidan.They were carrying their traditional weapons and sang and danced to the beat of traditional musical instruments.

        "When a person gets converted to another religion,he/she leaves his own culture.Tribes have their own culture,tradition, language and other rituals.If the person distances himself or herself from this,how can we call him or her an adivasi,"said Union minister of state for tribal affairs Bishweswar Tudu during the rally.

       Tudu said tribal outfits are demanding that the center of state government should not give facilities meant for ST people to converted tribals.Janajati Surakshya Manch across the country have been demanding delisting of tribals, who have undergone religious conversions,from the ST status,"he added.

    While addressing the gathering at Janata Maidan,Ganeshram Bhagat, national coordinator of the Manch, said they will not take rest till the government stops providing ST status to converted tribals."We will continue our fight against this injustice.We will protect our adivasi brothers and sisters along with water; land and forest(Jal,Zameen aur Jangal)," he added.

    Bhagat said their people have been working tirelessly to stop the religious conversion among tribals."We have received huge support from Odisha tribals.We will take this movement forward and work for the tribals." he added.

     Police sources said the procession did not affect traffic in the city.

     "As they came from three different places,we guided them to use less busy routes of the city.Police were deployed to monitor their movement and control the traffic,"said a senior police officer of the commissionerate police.
