Plant 50 trees for each girl born in Panchayat.

    Saroj Devi Agrawal,the sarapanch of Bhaleswar in Nuapada district,has come up with a unique initiative to save the girl child.She has decided to plant 50 saplings every time a girl is born in her panchayat.

  Agrawal tweeted her plan and requested authorities for guidance, tagging the district magistrate,chief district agriculture officer, district forest officer, chief secretary among other officials.

      "We have decided that we will plant 50 trees after the birth of any girl child in our panchayat,so we are requesting you to guide us to arrange saplings for us," she tweeted.

     District magistrate Hema Kanta say responded,instructing the DFO to help in the initiative."Apart from the tweet, the DM also texted us and encouraged us with his support," said Agrawal.

    Agrawal planned in initiative with a two- pronged approach - afforestation to save the environment and spreading awareness about girl child empowerment."Girls are still being married off at a young age in rural India.Even if they are sent to school,the parents don't encourage them to study further than class 10 or work after that.To address these issues,we thought of this plan were we will plant 50 saplings when a girl is born.The way,as the child grows up and is nurtured.the trees grow up with them.This will not only help in afforestation,but will also spread awareness about women empowerment," she added.Agrawal has also announced that if a girl tops her Class 10 board exams,she will be made the sarapanch for a day.

       "People revere the post of sarpanch.I plan to make the girl topper under may gram panchayat the sarapanch for a day and make her meet people.This will spread awareness that girls too can make it big and take up important roles in society,"she said.
