Inclusion sickle cell disease chapter in colleges .
In a bid to create awareness on prevention of sickle cell disease, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has requested vice-chancellors and principals of universities and colleges to consider inclusion of a chapter on the subject in their curriculum.
The move by the UGC came after a letter from the Indian council of Medical Research (ICMR) asking the commission to take up the matter at the state level in order to ensure greater awareness on the issue.
"Sickle cell disease is a major public health problem in India,It is a lifelong disease and bone marrow transplantation is the only curative option. However, the symptoms can be effectively managed with adequate counseling and therapy," read the letter of ICMR director general Balram Bhargava.
Bhargava further stated that awareness on sickle cell disease at different community levels, including schools and higher educational institutions, through a well drafted educational programme may be helpful in preventing the disease.

"Medical professionals are also of the view that mass awareness is the need of the hour to prevent and cure sickle cell disease," pediatrician Jyoti Ranjan Sahoo said.
