Early Summer vacation for schools.

Severe heatwave conditions forced the government to announce early summer vacation for schools, around three weeks ahead of schedule. The vacation was scheduled to begin on May 4.

"Given the prevailing heatwave conditions, summer vacation for schools(from class I to XII), both government and private, will start from April 21," the chief minister's office directed. The school and mass education department will notify the date of reopening in due course, the order added. Earlier, the government had suspended classes for some days in two phases.

In the past two weeks, the summer has become harsh across Odisha. 30 places recorded maximum temperatures above 40°C, with the Mercury reaching 44.5° C in Baripada.

"Safety of children is the priority of the government for which the chief minister has preponed the summer vacation. Decisions regarding reopening or online classes will be taken subsequently. Parents and teachers in all government schools will attend parent-teacher meetings and request all parents to attend the meeting and share their views. Headmasters have been asked to conduct the meeting between 7 am and 10 am given the scorching heat and to make arrangements for drinking water," said school and mass education minister Saint Ranjan Das.

The India Meteorological Department has issued orange and yellow warnings for 12 districts for heatwave conditions till April 22 after which the temperature may drop slightly. The Special Relief Commissioner has advised all collect-era to take steps for the safety of people and to advise people to avoid exposure to the summer heat.

However, the Odisha Abhibhavak Mahasangh(OAM) — the state-level parents association, has demanded that classes should continue for IX to XII, "Closing down schools for classes I to VIII is fine, but the government should allow schools to continue education for classes IX to XII because a student of higher classes goes to private tuitions. So, it is better to allow them to come to school and send them back early" said Basudev B hart, convenor of OAM.
