Age criteria for admission to military school contravenes the National Education policy.

    The Punjab and Haryana High court has issued notice to the Centre on a plea which alleged the age criteria for admission to the Dehradun based prestigious military boarding school Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) contravenes the National Education Policy (NEP).

      Justice Vikas Bahl has asked the ministry of defense (MoD), Union HRD ministry and the RIMC to submit their responses by April 11.A Chandigarh resident,Sarthak Sangwan,12,has filed the plea through his father,Major Sandeep Sangwan.

The plea has sought directions to quash a February 3 RIMC notification inviting applications for examination for admission to Class VIII while fixing the minimum age at 11 and a half years and maximum at 13.The NEP 2020 states that the minimum age for admission to Class 8 is 13 years,the plea contends.

        The plea has sought directions to remove the RIMC age anomaly and fix it in consonance with NEP 2020.Sarthak was born on October 15,2010.He is a student of Class VI at a Chandigarh school.

    According to the plea,the Chandigarh administration also follows the NEP 2020 norms.Due to this disparity in age criteria for admission to Class I,all students in Union Territory of Chandigarh and 21 other states will not be eligible for the examination conducted by RIMC, Dehradun,this year.

    The petitioner's advocate,Rahul Deswal, argued in the HC that the RIMC age norms would result in discrimination and give unfair advantage to other students.He contended that the Kendriya  in Delhi,in conformity with NEP 2020,have already fixed the minimum age for admission to Class I at six years,or above.
