Artificial market for improvement of students' practical knowledge in math.

    The kandhamal administration has introduced the concept of artificial markets across all the upper primary schools in the district to improve the students' practical knowledge about math.

     One such market was set up at the upper primary school at Kendupadar in Phulbani block as part of which the students brought fruits,cloth materials, stationary items,etc,for sale.

      "The buyers(who are also students) purchased the items by paying artificial currency of different denominations," district education officer PK Sarangi said,adding,"The students learned basic mathematics like addition, subtraction,multiply and divide from this concept.They also learned the units of different items like numbers, kilogram,liter,meter, millimeter, centimeter,etc, through the weight and measures."

        "We have introduced the concept of artificial market under the Shiksha Ankur initiative.The students have shown more interest in this participatory and informal way of learning,'kandhamal collector Ashish Ishwar patil,who is behind the initiative,said.

        The market is set up every week for around two hours."The teachers educate the students about items like vegetables, their color and their utility to improve their knowledge," Sarangi added.

   "We have also arranged for visits by doctors,engineers, professors, lawyers and the police who will conduct sessions with the students so that they can know about their respective profession,"Patil added.

      Sarangi said that they have completed at least 10 themes under the programme in the first session."The programme will be resumed once the ongoing annual exams are over,"he added.
