The digital revolution might have been beneficial for many but certainly not for 70-year-old Surplus Haitian. The Septuagenarian, too fragile to even stand on her own, was forced to trek miles to reach the nearest branch of the SBI to avail of the monthly pension of Rs 500 in Nabarangapur district.

While people are scared to step out owing to the prevailing heatwave across the state, Surjya was seen walking miles with the help of a plastic chair from her village to reach the SBI's Jharigaon branch as the government transfers all the money under various social security schemes to the beneficiaries bank accounts.

"A few months back I had an accident and since then I am unable to walk properly. As for the past four months, I had not received my pension, I decided to visit the bank as I have to put in my biometric signature to withdraw the amount," said Surplus.

"As I am unable to stand or walk properly, I am walking with the help of the chair. Also, the bank officials said that there is a mismatch of my finger in the biometrics," she added. While her elder son works outside the state, her younger son works as a daily labourer."The issue of mismatch of fingers in the biometrics has been sorted out. All her pending pension dues have been provided," said Anil Kumar Meher, manager of SBI Justly son branch.

Tulasi Prasad, an activist of Jharigaon, said through direct transfer is a good step, efforts should be made to deliver the money to the ill and the infirm. Also, no villages have banking services or Internet connectivity.
