NEET-UG records all-time high.
A record 20.8 lakh candidates have registered for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test - Undergraduate (NEET-UG) this year for over 1.4 lakhs MBBS/BDS seats, including in private colleges. The gender gap also breached the 2 lakh mark with 11.8 lakh female candidates, 2.8 lakhs more than males, registering for the test.
Two States recorded over two lakh registrations – Maharashtra (2.8 lakhs) and Uttar Pradesh ( 2.7 lakhs)--- and seven over one lakh – Rajasthan, Tamil Badly, Kerala, Karnataka, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh, Bringing back there-pandemic schedule, National Testing Agency ( NTA) had on December 16 announced that NEET-UG would be held on May 7.
According to registration trend data accessed, 20,87,445 candidates registered for the medical entrance test, which is 2.57 lakh more than that of last year, an increase of 11.5%.Barring 2020 and 2021, the exam has registered over a 10% increase every year, with 2018 registering a 16.5% rise.l

Category-wise breakup shows that the number of OBC candidates (8.9 lacks) is the highest among the reserved categories, followed by SC (over 3 lakhs). There are 1.5 lakh candidates from the EWS category and 1.3 lacks ST. Over 6 lakh candidates are in the 'General category.

As the exam date is drawing close, a section of the aspirants has been demanding its postponement on social media, citing a sudden rise in Covid cases across the country. However, government sources said the test will be conducted as per the schedule."The academic calendar needs to be back on track and that is why the dates were announced in December as part of the common calendar. Moreover, the test will be held with all Covid protocols in place as it was done in 2020 and 2021," said an official.
NEET-UG is the qualifying entrance exam for admission to Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery(MBBS), Bachelor of Dental Surgery(BDS), Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine, and Surgery(BAMS), Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery(BSMS), Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery(BUMS), Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) and BSc(H) Nursing courses.
