Flexibility to students to select any combination of subjects.

The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for school education envisages a host of changes, including calculation of marks for Class 10 and 12 Boards on the basis of cumulative performance of students besides offering flexibility to students to select any combination of subjects from the eight curricular areas which will be on offer in Classes 11-12.

Drawing from the National Education policy-2020, the draft NCF recommends modular examinations instead of a single year-end test. The draft made public on Thursday for feedback proposes at least twice a year Board exams and states that "the final certification will be based on the cumulative result of each of the examinations" as already reported.

The draft NCF is for breaking the straitjacket of streams and recommends a bouquet of eight curricular areas each for Classes 9-10 and 11-12.Students can opt for 16 choice -based courses from the eight curricular areas in Classes 11-12, to be covered through four semesters. Each choice -based course will be covered in one semester. However, for Classes 9-10, the annual schedule will be followed since all students will do the same courses. The document states that the secondary stage of Classes 9-12,as envisaged in NEP,will comprise four years of multidisciplinary study while also giving students flexibility in choice of subjects in Classes 11-12.

The eight curricular areas are humanities; mathematics and computing; vocational education; physical education (sports for Class IX and XII);arts education; social science; science and interdisciplinary areas.

Students will be allowed to design their own courses at the level of Classes XI-XII.For example,if a student chooses physics(choice -based discipline) under science (curricular area),he or she can also choose arts as the second curricular area which also has music as a discipline.Mathematics could be the third curricular area while the fourth set of courses could be from any curricular area.Alternatively,if a student chooses social science as curriculum area and history (discipline) within it,he or she could then choose humanities as the second curricular area and do four courses in philosophy.

Mathematics could be the third curricular area with four courses in computer science which are part of it.The fourth discipline could be from any curricular area already chosen or from a completely different one.

A Class X pass out will complete two essential courses from each of the eight curricular areas(a total of 16) over two years of Class IX and X.

The draft, prepared by the national steering committee headed by former Isro chief K Kasturirangan and based on which the new school syllabus and textbook are to be designed, states: "The current practice of streaming into science,arts/humanities and commerce will be replaced by a design that enables both breadth through engagement with a variety of courses across streams and depth in areas chosen by students,"

The draft document states that four years of secondary study will include"essential courses which all students must take, choice - based courses which each student may select and vocational education, arts and sports which will be an integral part of the curriculum."

It draws from NEP which says that" students will be given increased flexibility and choice of subjects to study, particularly in secondary school and there will be no hard separation among curricular,' extracurricular ' or 'co-curricular', or between vocational or academic streams ".
