NHRC seeks report from state govt regarding Kanyashram girl death.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought action taken reports from the state government on the allegations of food poisoning in a Kanyashram in Balasore district where a girl student had died and more than 25 students fell sick.
The commission passed this direction on March 7 after hearing a petition filed by human rights activist and lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy.He alleged that the students,who live in Purubai Kanyashram at Soro in Balasore district, suffered immensely due to consumption of contaminated food.They also stay in unhygienic condition.
He also alleged that Kanyashram had served low quality food to the inmates in midday meals.The incident happened on February 18.One Class IX student,Bini Singh,died while undergoing treatment in the hospital.The failure of state government to monitor food, water, sanitation and health of the poor girls of the school amounts to serious human rights violation.
"The negligence of the administration in registering an FIR and taking legal and preventive measures amounts to violation of human rights of the minor girls studying in the school," he added.
Tripathy requested the NHRC to take legal action against the wrongdoers and also take preventive action for the future.He requested the commission to ensure heavy compensation to the next of kin of the deceased girl and to all 26 girls who suffered due to food poisoning and were admitted in the hospitals.
The commission directed the secretary of school and mass education department and Balasore district collector and SP to submit an action taken report within four weeks.A copy of the petition has also been forwarded to the chief secretary and the DGP of Odisha for information,read the order.
