4 rivers in twin cities are highly polluted, says minister.
Four rivers flowing in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and cuttack are highly polluted with high biochemical oxygen demand(BOD) in the water, the government told the assembly.Due to high BOD, which causes reduction of oxygen in water, foul smell emanates.
Three of the rivers- Gangua,Kuakhai and Daya which flow through Bhubaneswar and Kathajodi in Cuttack, have long stretches that are polluted because of high BOD content.
Forest minister Pradip Amat told the assembly that according to data from Central Pollution Control Board(CPCB) under the polluted River Stretches for Restoration of water Quality,2022,seven rivers in the state have high BOD,which indicates high pollution. He made the statement in reply to a question by Khandalada MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, who wanted to know water quality of which rivers are not fit for use as per the CPCB.The other three river, whose water quality is bad are Serua in Sankhatrasa,Brahmani in Rourkela and Mangala in Golasahi.
"For these categories of water,we have conventional treatment and disinfection method after which it can be made fit for use.The Odisha water Supply and Sewerage Board(OWSSB) has drawn up plans to check pollution in these rivers," Amant said.
He further said for cleaning of Kathajodi, Sewerage treatment plants(STP) of total 85 million litres per day capacity have been set up in two places - Mattagajpur and Kathajodi. For cleaning Daya,STPs have been set up at Meherpali,Basuaghai,Kochilaput,Paikrapur and Rokat.
