An Amount 15,000 crore for tribals sickle cell disease.
The announcement of a mission to eliminate sickle cell disease (SCD) and prime minister PVTG Development Mission in the Union Budget 2023 is likely to benefit tribal communities in president Droupadi Murmu's home state.
The prevalence of sickle cell disease ranges between 10% and 15% among the tribal communities of Odisha.The newly proposed missions are aimed at focusing attention on the disease and the basic living conditions of tribals, including the particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs).
An amount of Rs 15 000 crore will be allocated under the PM PVTG Development Mission in the next three years under the Development action plan for Scheduled Tribes,finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her budget speech.
This will strengthen the socio-economic condition of PVTGs or tribal communities, she pointed out.
The announcement of Missions for the PVTGs and to check sickle cell disease is a welcome step.The disease has a high prevalence rate among tribal communities while there is lack of awareness among them. But these are not the first such schemes for the tribal communities. The implementation of the schemes is important and crucial for the Development of these indigenous people, said Badal Tah,an activist of Rayagada Nagarika Manch,who has been working among the tribal communities of Rayagada for past 30 years.
Under the scheme,PVTG families and habitations will be provided with basic facilities like safe housing, clean drinking water,sanitation, Access to health and education, nutrition,road and telecom connectivity and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The proposed Mission to eliminate sickle cell disease is aimed at wiping out inherited blood disorder from the country by 2047.The ministry of tribal affairs has decided to screen the disease in tribal-dominated district. The state government has plans to take up the screening and early detection in the rest of the districts.
