Pediatric and general OPDs in hospitals and private clinics are swelling with patients, mostly children as common flu and superadded bacterial infection with (H influenza) is causing widespread illness among them in the state.
Pediatricians said the duration of cough is persisting beyond the time that is usually triggered by normal flu.We are dealing with patients, who have complaints of pharyngitis and conjunctivitis triggered by the viral infection. In the years before the pandemic, flu in winter used to have different clinical manifestations but post-pandemic,mixed strains of viruses are causing recurrence of infection in people, said senior pediatrician and critical care expert Dr Janaki Ballav Pradhan.
While the cough remains for a long time as the infection causes granular pharyngitis and high grade fever, myalgia is also noticed in many.In some children, respiratory syncytial virus and influenza A are also involved parents of children are at a loss to understand the reason behind the prolonged cough, wheezing symptoms followed by some gastroenterological complications.
Asthma-like wheezing symptoms and allergy were found to be common in children.Children are also complaining of fatigue and mood swings.
Senior pulmonologist Dr SampT Das said when the illness starts with viral upper respiratory tract infection, people take it as normal flu and buy over-the-counter medication for their children, which only worsens the situation.
