Collector performed kathak dance for prevention of child marriage.
In a bid to get a social message across, the district collector of Subarnpur put up a traditional dance performance during a local cultural programme with the massage to prevent child marriage. The IAS officer,Aboli Naravane,incorporated a popular Hindi song that talks about prevention of crime against women into her Kathak performance to convey the message.
The three-minute impromptu performance focused on making the audience, who were mostly villagers,aware on how vital it is to educate the girl child,Instead of marrying them of at a minor stage,we had organised the Subarnapur Lok Mahostav to create festive ambience for the ongoing Men's Hockey World Cup,and since we have been working relentlessly on the prevention of child marriage in our district,I thought of organising a performance on the same theme,Aboli,who started learning Kathak when she was seven,said.
She added,This is the first time that I performed since becoming an IAS officer(in 2015)
According to the National Family Health Survey(NFHS)-4 conducted in 2015-16,the rate of child marriage among girls in Odisha was 21.3% and 22.2% in Subarnapur.In the NFHS-5 survey conducted in 2019-21,the child marriage rate among girls in Odisha and in Subarnapur dropped to 20.5% and 16.9%,respectively.
Aboli said the administration has taken several initiatives to stop the marriage age of girls below 18 years and boys below 21 years.
We conduct a Sankalp campaign through the formation of child marriage prevention committees in villages.At least 767,out of 962 village in Subarnapur,have been Declared as child marriage free.Meetings are conducted in villages regularly to raise awareness against child marriage. In 2020,we prevented 33 child marriages,64 in 2021,48 last year and two this month, Aboli said.
